Overview
Our Pyrotechnics Detection Dogs (PDD) provide a highly mobile and effective capability for the detection of pyrotechnic compositions including:
- Commercial fireworks
- Homemade pyrotechnic mixtures
- Black powder & smokeless powder
- Flash powders and display-grade compositions
This capability is particularly valuable for crowded public spaces, stadia, events, transport hubs, and high-risk environments where pyrotechnics pose both safety and security threats.
Operational Role
PDD teams are trained to detect pyrotechnic materials carried on persons, concealed within bags or vehicles, or hidden within structures or event infrastructure. They operate discreetly and efficiently, providing:
- Pre-event screening.
- Entry point & queue screening.
- Randomised patrol sweeps.
- Back-of-house and staff screening.
- Vehicle & goods-in searches.
- Rapid deployment to intelligence-led risks.
Training & Standards
All PDD teams undergo intensive training and continuous assessment, utilising live pyrotechnic compounds across varied operational settings. Training includes:
- Off-lead search capability
- Non-intrusive passive indication
- Operational conditioning around crowds, noise & distractions
- Exposure to venues, vehicles, warehouses & outdoor sites
- Independent assessments through our in-house training and QA cell
Every dog and handler is certified to our internal standard, aligned with UK and international best practice.
Why PDD Capability Matters
Illegal or unauthorised pyrotechnics remain a serious risk within the UK, particularly for:
- Stadiums & sports events
- Nightclubs and entertainment venues
- Festivals and concerts
- Transport networks
- Critical infrastructure sites
A single pyrotechnic device can cause crowd panic, injuries, fires or security disruptions. A trained PDD team provides early detection, risk reduction, and visible deterrence.
